The Nigeria Sex Workers Association (NSWA) has urged the law enforcement agencies to protect its members from harassment, violence, and abuse across the nation. 

In a statement issued on Tuesday in Lagos State, the National Coordinator, Amaka Enemo, said, “Recent reports indicate a disturbing rise in physical assaults, harassment and extortion of sex workers by both clients and law enforcement officials.”

Enemo called on authorities to recognise the humanity of sex workers, emphasising their rights to protection and safety.

“Sex workers are not criminals but individuals with rights, who deserve the protection of security agencies,” she stated.

She further highlighted the role of sex workers in promoting community health by reducing the spread of sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, the News Agency of Nigeria reports. 

“Despite the critical role that sex workers play in the economy and society, they continue to be subjected to systematic violence, discrimination and stigmatisation,” she said. 

The association demanded comprehensive training for law enforcement personnel, the creation of safe reporting mechanisms, and accountability for any violence or discrimination. 

The NSWA reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the rights and safety of its members and called on government agencies, NGOs, and the public to join in fighting injustice against sex workers. 

“Public awareness campaigns to combat stigma and ensuring justice for victims are crucial steps,” Enemo added.
