Some Nigerian personalities, including pro-democracy advocate Omoyele Sowore, #BringBackOurGirls co-founder Aisha Yesufu, and prominent theatre practitioners, scholars, and artists, will participate as panellists and speakers at the 2024 Centre for Socially Engaged Theatre's (C-SET) Festival of Arts and Discourse. Located within the University of Regina's Faculty of Media, Arts and Performance in Saskatchewan, Canada, the C-SET is set to host the notable event.
The C-SET is hosting the five-day research showcase from November 25-29, 2024. This free event, part of the Canada Research Chair in Socially Engaged Theatre programme, will feature exhibitions, talks, debates, and panel discussions on policing, justice, and socially engaged theatre practices.
According to Afolabi, the event will highlight several projects focused on policing, including: “Staging Justice: People, Places, Planet, and Practice," a project echoing the theme of the CATR/ACRT 2024 conference, research presentations by the centre's graduate students, a display of the play "Past Shadows, Present Shades," which reflects on migrants' experiences and imagines new futures.
Okechukwu Nwanguma, Executive Director of the Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre and a vocal advocate for responsible policing, is also among the lineup of Nigerian speakers.
Located within the University of Regina's Faculty of Media, Arts and Performance in Saskatchewan, Canada, the C-SET is set to host the notable event.
Additionally, the event will feature an exhibition of protest artworks depicting policing in three countries. These artworks, provoked by protests against police brutality, are intended for educational purposes and have been made publicly accessible by the artists.
According to Dr. Taiwo Afolabi, C-SET's Director and Canada Research Chair in Socially Engaged Theatre, the event will feature and celebrate diverse projects focused on policing, highlighting the centre's commitment to socially engaged theatre and interdisciplinary artistic scholarship.
